Malvern – Worcestershire, is variously known as Great Malvern and Malvern Spa. The name has come from Celtic origins and means “bare hill”. It makes a charming weekend getaway or an interesting stop on a touring itinerary of England.
The town of Malvern gained popularity for its spas, which are known to have very pure waters. In its hey day as a spa town it welcomed such esteemed guests as Queen Victoria who cam seeking out the healthful powers of its waters.
Malvern is also well known for its impressive Norman church St Mary and St Michael. This is a marvelous example of architecture and it is best known for its medieval tiles, the finest in England, that were made and produced by the monks at the attached monastery. The church is also famous for its impressive stained glass, which has often been compared to York Cathedral’s.
Little Malvern Court Priory Church dates from the 14th century and has some impressive stained glass that has been restored. The glass features members of the royal family from the 15th century.
Inside the 14th century gatehouse of Malvern Abbey is the Malvern Museum. This has some fascinating displays and artifacts that date all the way back to the iron age. There is also a great focus on the natural history of the area, which may be linked to the connection that the town has to Charles Darwin. The museum is open from 10am to 5pm everyday except Wednesdays.
Since the town has a long history as a spa town, you cannot come to Malvern and not sample the pure waters of its springs. St Anne’s Well is fountain that is housed in a building dating back to 1815. It makes a lovely outing especially when combined with lunch at the nearby cafe in the complex. Further up into the Malvern Hills you will find the Worcestershire Beacon, which is a great place to view the surrounding hills and countryside from the viewing platform and telescopes.
There are many other wells that can be visited in the area and some of them include:Holy Well, Morris Well, Temperance Fountain, Enigma Fountain, Jubilee Fountain and Evendine Spring. Malvern – Worcestershire offers some lovely walking tour opportunities in the Malvern Hills and makes a charming getaway spot.
